biz ladies: online etiquette and ethics (part 2)

rosie_the_riveter1
Last week, I dove into re-living our Alt Summit panel on Blogging Etiquette bit by bit. I got pretty in depth covering Part 1: Comments, Copying and Crediting and wrote over 4,000 words, so today I’ll do my best to be as concise as possible* while covering our next series of topics.

Today I’m tackling Part 2: Submissions, Sponsorship, Giveaways & Freebies. This section of our panel had Joy, Emily and I offering our advice and experiences dealing with a wide range of topics, many of which we had differing opinions on. So these topics are definitely open for personal interpretation and feedback. I still struggle with some of these on a daily basis, so I’m most curious to see what YOU guys have to say about today’s topic. Blogging has changed so much since I started six years ago, and some of these topics, while once considered controversial (sponsorship and advertising) are now totally commonplace. So I’m excited to see how all of you see these topics affecting your blogs or your experience with reading blogs. I hope you’ll chime in with your ideas and issues, and as always, I’m happy to answer any questions, comments or concerns you have about these topics. So, let’s dive in and discuss the etiquette and ethics behind Submissions, Sponsorship, Giveaways & Freebies. xo, grace

*Sorry, I failed. Today’s post is over 3,000 words. Hopefully we can fill the comments section with 3,000 of YOUR words and get a mix of opinions, thoughts and ideas here. Stay tuned next week for the final installment: Contributors, Collaboration and — my favorite — Social Networking Etiquette.

living in: diner

Maybe I’m biased, being a lover of both Baltimore and endless cups of coffee, but Barry Levinson’s Diner is practically perfect. A group of ambling college-aged gentleman tease, taunt and terrorize their way through Charm City in 1959, and it couldn’t be more of a treat. I always joke that everything I’ve learned about boys, I’ve learned from watching Diner.

1. Will Return Clock, $5; 2. Baltimore Colts Pennant, $25; 3. Diner Accessories Set, $44; 4. The Hill-Side Necktie, $83; 5. Bakery Cake Plate and Cover, $29; 6. Franco Sarto Wingtips, $41; 7. Vintage 1950s Bar Stools, $800 each; 8. Ashtray, $54; 9. Diner Coffee Mug, $5

The Fells Point Diner is the group’s home base, and it makes one nostalgic for a time when you were able to stay up till dawn eating French fries with your best friends. Nowadays, I get yawny at 10pm, and French fries are on the “special occasions only” list, so I live vicariously however I can, even if it means an extra swipe of red lipstick and another cup of coffee. — Amy M.

1. Mulberry Swing Coat, $1,016; 2. Popcorn Container, $19/pack of 100; 3. Curling Iron, $24; 4. Solitaire Engagement Ring, $425; 5. This is Sinatra! Vinyl Record, $29; 6. Hotline Phone, $48; 7. Revlon Lipstick in Ravishmere, $5; 8. Petrie Sofa, $1,599; 9. Retro Turntable, $128

graphic usa: an illustrated guide to 25 cities

Speaking of city guides, one of my big dreams is to one day turn the D*S city guides into an illustrated book that people can carry with them (or on their phone) when they’re traveling across the globe. I’ve been squirreling away little design and layout ideas for a while now, so when I saw this email from Ziggy Hanaor about a brand new city guide book written and illustrated by graphic designers, I was instantly smitten. Packed to the brim with creative illustrations, interesting layout designs and, of course, fantastic tips for traveling, Graphic USA (Cicada Books, 2011) is a wonderful example of how fun and creative city guide books can be. Ziggy describes the book as an “alternative guidebook,” but I think most of you will find their recommendations for great places in each of these 25 American cities to be right up your alley. If you’re interested in traveling with some great local tips the next time you hit the road, click here to check out and pick up a copy of Graphic USA. You can also check out more of Ziggy’s great books about wallpaper, crafts and ceramics right here. xo, grace

While many may be unfamiliar with this southern New Zealand locale, Adrienne shares a thorough guide of all the marvelous food, drink, shopping, arts and culture that can be found there. Thanks, Adrienne, for enlightening us on this southern Kiwi destination! — Stephanie

paul price: signs of affection

Here’s a quick bit of afternoon eye candy: colorful “Signs of Affection” from graphic designer Paul Price. Wandering by one of these on a cold afternoon sure would be a cheerful surprise. I’m hoping Paul’s work somehow makes it over to the gray Brooklyn streets in my area, so I can stumble upon “Your Hair Looks Dashing.” That would totally make any bad day feel like it was taking a turn for the better.
