sneak peek: armin blasbichler

On a recent trip to Italy, London-based writer and founding editor of Domestic Sluttery, Sian Meades, had the opportunity to visit Armin Blasbichler’s home in South Tyrol. Designed to look like the ubiquitous log stacks in local fields, Sian thought the home would be a perfect peek for Design*Sponge readers. Since she was the one to actually step through the doors, we’re going to let her take it away. Thanks, Sian! — Amy A.

Across South Tyrol in northern Italy, log stacks (or “musls,” as they’re known locally) sit in fields across the lush landscape. Ever since architect Armin Blasbichler was a child, he had the idea to build a house that looked just like the log stacks and let the home blend into the scenery that he had grown up with. The result is der Muslhaufen, which sits in Lüsen, not far from the Dolomites. — Sian

Image above: Armin lives with his wife and two young boys, and the design of the house is so playful. Doors covered in light switches to confuse visitors and doors within doors for the children to use; everything has a fun element to it. This door has little Pantone reference panels for every color they can see in the nature around them.

Image above: There are even doors on the ceiling!

sneak peek: sverrir & berglind mari

Iceland is the most beautiful place I have visited. Hands down. And honestly, after a weekend of soaring temperatures in Brooklyn, I’m thrilled to just type the word ice. It’s such a treat to peek inside a home in Iceland’s capital city, Reykjavík. Sverrir Asgeirsson and Berglind Mari Valdemarsdóttir have lived in this home in for 7 years. Berglind Mari is currently working on a master’s degree in Applied Studies of Culture, and her husband, Sverrir, is an architect and product designer, so the aesthetics of the space were extremely important. And in an effort to combat the dark Nordic winters, they gravitate toward lots of white with bright pops of color. The result is a home that is cheerful and relaxing! Thanks, Sverrir & Berglind Mari! — Amy A.

Image above: Since all the walls inside our home are white, we wanted a cheerful splash of color somewhere. That’s why we chose to put wallpaper on one wall in our living room. We bought the wallpaper at Habitat.

Image above: We like our bedroom to look simple and personal. I sewed the colorful pillowcases from a fabric bought at Ikea, and my son and I cut out the hearts above the bed.

sneak peek: hillary petrie of egg collective

To enter this light, airy New Orleans apartment, visitors must pass through a small communal gate, then a beautiful shared courtyard and finally onto this bright space. Each apartment in the complex has a porch overlooking the courtyard, and it’s the perfect place to wind down after a long day. Egg Collective designer, Hillary Petrie, has lived in this charming Southern apartment with her roommate, architect John Kleinschmidt, for nearly four years. It’s proven to be the perfect retreat from their busy lives. I love seeing shared spaces that prove that living with roommates doesn’t mean sacrificing style. Thanks, Hillary & John! — Amy A.

Image above: The butcher-block prep table came out of a hotel kitchen in St. Louis, Missouri, and is perfect for entertaining — it’s where people tend to congregate. It also weighs nearly 300 pounds! This portion of a porcelain sign seems to be the result of a business name-change — I assume they removed the “Inc.,” and kept the rest. I picked this up at my favorite New Orleans thrift store, the Bargain Center. The wooden chair belongs to my roommate, John Kleinschmidt, and I love its detail. His father salvaged, refinished and caned the piece, as well as a similar one in the workroom.

Image above: The bed is DWR “Min,” and the blue dresser is one of my favorite thrift store finds — it came from an old girls’ boarding school.

make it yours: elisabeth dunker

Elisabeth Dunker is a multi-talented Swedish stylist/photographer. She is the founder of Lula and also runs Studio Violet along with Camilla Engman. It’s no surprise that Elisabeth’s home is immaculately styled; it’s filled with gorgeous color schemes, textures and designs. When decorating, Elisabeth loves a warm yellow in combination with gray (love this!) and keeps in mind “real materials” like wood, wool and stone. Her house is truly an inspiration! reservoir green

Yesterday my cousin came down to Portland from Seattle and we spent the afternoon wandering through Mt. Tabor Park and soaking up a seriously gorgeous day. As luck would have it, we stumbled upon a downhill skateboard race and found an excuse to spend even more time outside while the weather gave us a brief break from all the rain. I spent most of the day staring at the trees and sky, but when I walked by the reservoir in the park I was struck by how beautifully green the water was. I’m assuming that’s a natural color (I’m also assuming someone’s going to correct me here and tell me that’s a bad color for water to be), but no matter what caused it, the water was so beautiful I took about a dozen pictures so I could go home and try to replicate it in paint form. I don’t know if I can quite nail the right blue-green mix, but this platter at Anthro gets pretty close. I’ve spent most of my summer drawn to colors like this so I think it might be time to take the leap and break out the paint rollers. Until then, this platter might need to come home as inspiration.

And while I’m at it, this floral wallpaper might need to join the platter. If I have to leave all this lush greenery and wildflower-heaven behind, at least I can surround myself with wallpaper flowers. Click here to check out the wallpaper online ($148) and here for the platter ($168). -grace

furry tribute

This weekend I bought my tickets to fly back to Brooklyn and I’m already starting to miss Portland. Aside from the amazing shops, restaurants, nature and people, I really loved how many ridiculously cute dogs I got to meet. Everyone here seems to have a dog they bring to work (or just around town during the day) and they all have been nice enough to let me play with or pet them while I go through serious cat-withdrawal. I’m not quite ready to get my own dog yet (I think Turk would have something to say about that), so I think this pillow is as close as I can get for right now. It combines my love of watercolor-style illustrations with three dogs I wish I could walk about town with me this week. Click here to check out the pillow and order online ($29). -grace
