before & after: salvaged backyard renovation

Spring is finally here, and with it comes an influx of outdoor renovation projects, which are my favorites. Do I love them best because I have no backyard? Probably, but I see no harm in enjoying the vicarious thrill of watching people weed, plant and build their dream gardens. If the time comes for me to own a little plot of outdoor space, you can bet I’ll be taking tips from Before & Afters like this one.

Using almost entirely salvaged materials and performing their own laborious weed exorcism, Clayton and Chaz created a beautiful, serene space on an extremely limited budget. I find it incredibly inspiring to see such a wealth of great materials; it just takes patience and perseverance to seek them out and a lovely, simple design to let the beauty of those raw materials show through. Great work, guys! — Kate

lacie thumb drives

The last time I visited my parents’ house in Virginia, I found myself digging through my childhood closet. Buried under layers of old drawings and yearbooks were a few small pouches that contained mementos from our family’s trip to Italy. Next to a seriously crumbly (but not moldy!) packet of breadsticks I took from a pizza parlor in Rome was a wad of small Italian bills and some beautiful change. I have a serious fondness for coins, especially when they’re from other countries. I don’t collect them per se, but I’ve never been able to resist using coins as styling tools and materials for decoration when I have the chance. So when I saw these adorable USB drives at Object in Seattle, I immediately added them to my wish list. Each of these USB drives is shaped like a coin and slides right into the dock to hold anywhere from four to sixteen gigs of data. As long as you don’t mistake these for real change in your wallet, they’re perfect. I might have to grab a few for design week, when I’ll be uploading and downloading press images like a crazy person. Click here to check out and shop these USB drives online. xo, grace

frances & francis paper flowers

I’ve never been much of a paper flower girl, but these paper bouquets from Frances & Francis are gorgeous. Made from real twigs, branches and paper, each looks like a work of art that will, thankfully, last much longer than real flowers. In addition to these smaller bouquets, Frances & Francis also makes custom wedding bouquets. So if you’re looking for something a bit more permanent for your big day, these could be a great option. Click here to check out their latest bouquet designs (Rosetta, Sofia & Juliet) online and place an order. xo, grace

entwined leaf rug

I love to tease Amy about her distaste for the color chartreuse/citron. It happens to be one of my favorites, and every time I find something I like in that color, I can’t resist turning my laptop toward her so I can see her trademark “I hate chartreuse” sneer. This rug is a great example of why I love this color. It reminds me of spring pollen, which — though terrible for your sinuses— is fantastic for homes. It’s an odd in-between color that strikes me as modern and fresh. Combine that color with a fun, ropey rug design and I’m officially sold. If I had a summer porch, I would definitely use this rug there. It recalls summer mornings spent at my family’s home in VA, where just about every summer activity takes place on the porch. If you’re looking for a good summer rug, click here to check out this Entwined Leaf Rug online ($398+). xo, grace

mother’s day kit

Mother’s Day is one of those holidays that sneak up on me every year. Thankfully my Mom and I have similar taste, so finding something is always more fun than challenging. This year Amy and I are taking our respective moms on a mother-daughter trip to Brimfield, which happens to fall on Mother’s Day. I’m pretty excited about the lucky overlap, but I’m always on the lookout for good Mother’s Day ideas. This year the Tool & Tack team is putting together a Mother’s Day gift box that would make an excellent gift for any mom. Leah Duncan, Paloma’s Nest and Miss Natalie contributed an illustration, cotton tea towel, “I love you” bowl and a hand-painted apple box to create this special package. The full set comes packed in a pretty wooden box with a hand-stamped leather gift tag, all for $80 at Canoe. If you like the idea of grouping pretty items, this is definitely for you. Click here to check out the set in more detail and shop online. xo, grace
