Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: nothing to lament on account of disappearance(Srila Prabhupada speaks on His Divine Grace Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Prabhupada's Disappearance Day -- Los Angeles, December 13, 1973. A meditation for Srila Prabhupada's disappearance day and also remembering our dear godbrother Purnacandra Goswami.) Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura passed away from this material world on 31st December, 1936. So almost forty years past. So there are two phases, prakata and aprakata, appearance and disappearance. So we have nothing to lament on account of disappearance because Krsna and Krsna's devotee... Not only devotees, even the nondevotees, nobody disappears. Nobody disappears because every living entity... As Krsna is eternal... It is confirmed in the Vedic literature, nityo nityanam cetanas cetananam (Katha Upanisad 2.2.13). The description of the Supreme Lord is that He is also nitya, eternal, and the living entities are also eternal... So spiritually, appearance and disappearance, there is no difference. Just like in material point of view, if a person takes birth... Suppose you get a son born, you become very happy. The same son, when passes away, you become very unhappy. This is material. And spiritually, there is no such difference, appearance or disappearance. So although this is the disappearance day of Om Visnupada Sri Srimad Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, so there is nothing to be lamented. Although we feel separation, that feeling is there, but spiritually, there is no difference between appearance and disappearance. Australian News: Home made Bomb attack at New Vrindaban Hare Krishna Community in USAResidents in the New Vrindaban Community in Marshall County, which houses the Palace of Gold, believe they were the target to a hate crime. “People are ignorant about what religion is and hate it instead of coming to find out what actually is here,” night guard Gerald Yule said. Residents in this community practice the Hare Krishna religion, and worship a God they call Krishna. It was during a festival just after 12:30 a.m. on Halloween night when someone drove down a community road, threw some sort of explosive device out the window, and onto the community’s property. Yule said he along with several hundred community members and tourists were inside the Hare Krishna Temple when he heard a loud boom outside. Some of the remnants are still left on site where witnesses said the explosive device ignited. A piece of tinfoil was found melted on the cement. “There were a lot of children out walking around which could easily turn into a tragic incident,” Yule said. Yule described the device as a Lipton tea bottle with tinfoil and some sort of chemical inside. Three other devices were found in the surrounding area. He said none of those ignited. “It was some sort of device sure designed to cause damage. We assigned two deputies on the case that are in conference with the prosecuting attorney on possible charges if locate they offenders,” Marshall County Sheriff John Gruzinskas said. Check out the great ideas and bold color schemes after the jump. Bhakti Lata, Alachua, USA: Countdown of FateThis is a screenshot of the countdown gadget on my Google homepage. I put it there about 120 days ago. But today I looked at it, really looked at it. I have often quoted the word “serendipity” in this blog because sometimes the little chances of life stack up like dominoes, and then there’s simply no other word to describe the beauty of adventure. When you unfurl the sails of travel, the winds of serendipity carry you to unknown shores. This is why I have a countdown on my homepage... *** On a soft June evening, I stood outside of the Columbus temple in a sarong and tank top, my skin brown from canoeing all day with 17 other girls. A big yellow schoolbus rumbled slowly down the street, and many hands stuck out the windows and waved furiously. Girls called out, “Bye, Bhakti! Bye!!! Hariboool!!” I lifted my hand to wave in return, and unexpected tears stung my eyes. “Haribol,” I murmured. I savored the final moments of my summer travels, and how each of the girls on the Yatra had all moved me with their unique love for Krishna. But my first semester at the University of Florida began in mere days, and I had to leave the Yatra early. Now, for you to fully understand the serendipity of my story, I need to describe my stack of dominoes. Several months ago, Festival of India published a tentative schedule which stated that Detroit Rathayatra would occur on June 19th. Kishori Yatra would follow Festival of India, so naturally we would be there that weekend. So I bought my plane ticket from Detroit. Then, Festival of India changed their schedule. But my flight could not change. So Columbus became the closest city to leave the Yatra from. Then I would catch a Greyhound bus to Detroit to then catch my flight back to Florida...! (Dizzy yet?) And that is why I found myself in a sarong on a soft summer evening, watching a big yellow schoolbus disappear around a corner. I turned around to face the quiet, empty temple. An hour later, I searched for Hari Venu, the kind, older gurukuli who was also in charge of the temple. But I couldn’t find him. I peered into the kitchen, where a lone young woman was busy cooking for the late evening offering. “Excuse me,” I asked. “Do you know how I can reach Hari Venu?” She turned around. “What for?” “He said he would take me to the bus station tomorrow morning,” “Oh, well I’ll take you,” she said. I spluttered a moment. “Ah, are you sure?” “Yes,” “Well, ah, thank you. And what is your name?” “Gokul Vilasini,” she replied. “Nice to meet you, my name is Bhakti lata,” I said. That evening, I sang for Sayana Arati for Sri Radha Natabara, and she offered arati. The next morning we went on a long japa walk down by the river. When we returned, we sat down to have breakfast and ended up talking until noon. At one point, an elder Prabhupad disciple, Mother Kamagiri, came over to discuss travel arrangements, for she had decided to come on the South India Yatra. Gokul seemed to be in charge of a traveling party that was all leaving together in December. While Mother Kamagiri and Gokul discussed the Yatra, I sat there in silence. I felt an odd desire blossom inside me. I wish I could go. A little later, Gokul drove me to the bus station, and she came in to wait with me. In the midst of our enthusiastic conversation, I said, "You know what, Gokul? We should travel together." "Yes, let's do it," she said. "Yes! Let's go to Vrindavan, Mayapur, Chowpatty...." "What about South India?" "Oh, definitely South India! South India is lovely. So I'm thinking India 2012, when I graduate. Take a year off before I start teaching, you know? What about you?" "Isn't that a bit far in the future?" "Yeah, well, it's tough to travel when you're a student. Believe me, I've thought the possibilities through. I want to go back to India so much." "Well what about the South India Yatra?" "This December?" "Yeah." "Oh," I laughed. "It's the dilemma of the starving student - no money. Besides, I'm going on the Winter Bus Tour. I've already saved up for it." "But would you go if you could?" "Well, it's not really my style. I like to spend time in one place, especially in India - really soak it in. But the South India Yatra does sound pretty cool." "What if I found you a sponsor?" I stared at Gokul. "Excuse me?" "What if I found you a sponsor? Would you go?" I was silent. Then I laughed. "Well...! Maybe!" "Well, noodle over it," she smiled and pointed to her head. "Think about it. I'll e-mail you in a couple days to confirm about a sponsor." We hugged goodbye and I got onto my bus, completely derailed. On the bus ride to Detroit, I wondered at how the dominoes of fate had led me to this moment - Kishori Yatra. My school schedule. The change of dates. The bus ride. That conversation with Mother Kamagiri. The ride to the bus station. One slight shift in events and none of this would have happened. It was an incredible idea, but the possibility that Gokul would find a sponsor for me seemed nil. So I just reveled in the possibility, amazed that someone would even offer such generosity, amazed that the Lord would arrange such a meeting. Three days later, Gokul e-mailed me. "I found you a sponsor. You decide if you want to come." All of my indecision melted in that moment. I replied: "Yes! I'll come." That was around 120 days ago. I have 30 days to go. My gratitude goes out to my dear godsister, Gokul Vilasini, and the anonymous devotee who has offered me such unconditional generosity to experience the holy dham. Amazing how with one drop of grace, the Lord can alter our lives in 24 hours. H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: 1263:45 A.M.Namamrta by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada: ‘Although chanting of the holy name is complete in itself, initiation and Deity worship are still necessary for purification’
“To chant the holy name of the Lord, one need not depend upon other paraphernalia, for one can immediately get all the desired results of connecting or linking with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. It may therefore be questioned why there is a necessity for initiation or further spiritual activities in devotional service for one who engages in the chanting of the holy name. The answer is though it is correct that one who fully engages in chanting the holy name need not depend upon the fruitive results. One need not depend upon a process of initiation, generally a devotee is addicted to many abominable habits due to material contamination from his previous life. In order to get quick relief from all these contaminations, it is required that one engage in the worship of the Lord in the temple….Srila Rupa Gosvami has described that the holy name of the Lord can be chanted by liberated souls, but almost all the souls we have to initiate are conditioned. It is advised that one chant the holy name of the Lord without offenses and according to the regulative principles, yet due to their past, bad habits they violate these rules and regulations. Thus the regulative principles for worship of the Deity are also simultaneously essential.” (Sri Caitanya Caritamrta, Adi-lila 7.76) Whether or not one is properly initiated if he chants the holy name offenselessly he is a pure Vaisnava and must be respected. Whether a Vaisnava is properly initiated or not is not a subject for consideration. One may be initiated and yet contaminated by the mayavada philosophy but a person who chants the holy name of the Lord offenselessly will not be so contaminated. A properly initiated Vaisnava may be imperfect, but one who chants the holy name of the Lord is all perfect. Although he may apparently be a neophyte he still has to be considered a pure unalloyed Vaisnava. It is the duty of a householder to offer respects to such an unalloyed Vaisnava. In the Padyavali by Rupa Gosvami says in the verse 29, “Simply by touching the holy name with one’s tongue, immediate effects are produced. Chanting the holy name does not depend on initiation, pious activities or the puruscarya regulative principles generally observed before initiation. The holy name does not wait for all these activities, it is self sufficient.” It is clearly stated that chanting is self sufficient. But the acaryas also state that if one is a serious devotee he will take up both the pancaratrika-viddhi path and the bhagavata-viddhi path. One should not neglect full practice just because he has heard that chanting can be done without any other purification. I was glad to wake up at one o’clock this morning without a pain. I went to my chanting and at first moved very quickly. Eventually my pace started to slow down, and I came to sixteen rounds by 3:30. This is the way I want to do it. Certainly if I am up early then I have an advantage and chant with more confidence. H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: One Hundred Prabhupada Poems# 83

H.H. Satsvarupa das Goswami: VariousFree WriteI turned at random to Canto 3, chapter 25, text 14: “Oh most pious mother, I shall now explain unto you the ancient yoga system, which I explained formerly to the great sages, it is serviceable and practical in every way.” The Lord does not manufacture a new system of yoga. Sometimes it is claimed that someone has become an incarnation of God and is expounding a new theological aspect of the Absolute Truth. But here we find that although Kapila Muni is the Lord Himself and is capable of manufacturing a new doctrine for His mother, He nevertheless says, “I shall just explain the ancient system which I once explained to the great sages because they were also anxious to hear about it.” When we have an excellent process already present in Vedic scriptures, there is no need to concoct a new system, to mislead the innocent public. At present it has become a fashion to reject the standard system and perform something bogus in the name of a newly invented process of yoga. Almost every year new systems of yoga are introduced with new yogis and new yoga styles appear. It has become a fashion for yogis to introduce their new methods and concoctions. But when the Supreme Lord Kapila was present, and wanted to teach yoga to His mother, He did not introduce a new system, although He was capable of such a thing. This shows the value of the original system of yoga as taught long ago and passed down unchanged by disciplic succession of masters and students. And especially in this age when conditions for meditation are unfavorable, the best system is sankirtana-yajna, with emphasis on congregational chanting of the holy names. I started back at the beginning of the Krishna book. When Kamsa hears the voice in the sky he immediately grabs Devaki’s hair and is ready to cut her head off. Vasudeva’s opening speech seems too philosophical and brahminical in this emergency situation. It’s a very good lesson why one should not be afraid of death because it’s inevitable and we transfer to another body. But I think it’s over the head of ferocious Kamsa, who’s arm is poised upraised and may be getting a little tired of being in that position. When Vasudeva sees his speech did nothing to convince Kamsa, he switched to a more diplomatic strategy and just tried to save his wife, saying they would turn any babies over to Kamsa to do as he liked. And he emphasized how it would be bad for Kamsa’s reputation if he killed his sister on her wedding day. Kamsa was pacified, and he freed Devaki and Vasudeva for the time being. But then Narada visited him and told him that the demigods were taking birth on the earth and preparing for the coming of the Lord. With the bad advice of his evil advisors, Kamsa put Vasudeva and Devaki in prison as well as gathering all the tribes. Vasudeva and Devaki had to suffer and Devaki had to give over six of her children to be killed by Kamsa. Later we learn in Krishna’s pastimes that the children were sons of Brahma who were cursed to die in this way because of their offenses to their father. It is a dark saga of krishna-lila and we have to accept the suffering of Devaki and Vasudeva as part of a higher plan. Things cannot be judged by any worldly standard of morality. In Caitanya-bhagavata, Lord Caitanya has revealed His identity as the Personality of Godhead to Sarvabhauma Bhattacacarya. It is told in a different way than in the Caitanya-caritamrta. There is no debate between Gopinatha Acarya and the followers of Sarvabhuma Bhattacarya about the identity of Lord Caitanya. That is a good section for understanding how to accept Lord Caitanya, by His mercy. And in Caitanya-bhagavata, the Bhattacarya doesn’t speak Vedanta with Lord Caitanya. But basically the story is the same, Sarvabhauma is shown the six-armed form of the Lord and composes one hundred verses in praise of Him and becomes His dear devotee.
Why don’t you go downstairs and draw after this rather then watch the football game? Haridasa told me he saw me lecturing on Govardhana Puja on the website. So some of it wasn’t lost after all, but they didn’t see the dancing around the hill. My Godbrother Jnanagamya is in town helping his son fix up his house. He wrote a script for a movie. He has no money, and it would take lots of money to produce. I read the script and liked it. It’s a romantic comedy. The lead character is a Hare Krishna devotee who works in an advertising agency. He’s a brilliant worker and they let him wear his robes and sikha. A millionairess owns the place and goes to work there to find out what’s happening in her office. The two of them start up a strange kind of acquaintance and she becomes romantically inclined to him and he to her. He gives her Bhagavad-gita, and she becomes interested in Krishna consciousness. The philosophy is described but the romantic comedy keeps the proselytizing humorous and upbeat. In the beginning he is a committed celibate/brahmacari but by the final scene they get married. The millionairess donates her office building for use as a Hare Krishna cultural center. It has past life regression in it and that’s pretty far out. It turns out she was his spiritual master in a past life but…lots of fun. I don’t know if he’ll be able to raise money and sell it. A lot of difficulty in filming it in New York City…I have no money to invest but I wish him well. I’ve chosen some CDs to take down to the art space in the basement. You could also listen to lectures by Srila Prabhupada. Discipline yourself to regularly spending time down there even in you can’t do very good art. Discipline yourself to drawing. Soon we’ll be getting paint and that will be even more of a commitment. These are all religious activities. Haridasa thinks it was wrong of Baladeva to sell my Govardhana drawing. He said it’s better if an artist keeps his work with him for a while as it helps him in doing new work. Hare Krishna is presented as universal religion in Jnanagamya’s film. It is not a crazy cult. The message of the movie Celibate in Chelsea was a good one, and it was told well. I almost felt I was watching the movie while I read the script. Japa Group: Easier For One To Always Chant

For some I am sure they were reminded of the brazen attack that took place in the 70's by the biker gang in New Vrindaban. In this case it is more than probably a act by a few local punks but concious security seems to be required more and more since temples are public places and can attract all sorts of elements. ISKCON Houston having their Radha Krishna deities stolen recently reminded of how Srila Prabhupada's murti was taken from ISKCON Toronto many years ago. A while back my son and daughter-in-law and my grandkids went on a trip and went to an ISKCON center which they had gone to many times before especially as youngsters. When they came back from the trip they told me how they were in the temple for over an hour and chanting in front of the deities but did not see anyone at all despite looking around. The deity gates were locked and Srila Prabhupada and everything else was in the open. As they were preparing to leave they finally saw someone coming into the temple. Krishna protects however devotees need to be security concious as Srila Prabhupada instructed us. http://www.statejournal.com/story.cfm?func=viewstory&storyid=89122 Akrura das, Gita Coaching: THEY IMITATEAll the living entities, being Your parts and parcels, are naturally joyful, eternal and full of knowledge, but due to their own faults they imitate You by trying to become the supreme enjoyer.

Yoga of Ecology, Bhakta Chris, USA: Navajos Hope To Shift From Coal To Wind And Sun
“It’s a new day for the Navajo people,” said Lori Goodman, an official with Diné Citizens Against Ruining Our Environment, a group founded 22 years ago by Mr. Tulley. “We can’t be trashing the land anymore.” Both presidential candidates in the Navajo election have made the pursuit of cleaner energy a campaign theme, but significant hurdles remain, including that Indian tribes, as sovereign entities, are not eligible for tax credits that help finance renewable energy projects elsewhere. And replacing coal revenue would not be easy. The mining jobs that remain, which pay union wages, are still precious on a reservation where unemployment is estimated at 50 percent to 60 percent. “Mining on Black Mesa,” Peabody officials said in a statement, “has generated $12 billion in direct and implied economic benefits over the past 40 years, created thousands of jobs, sent thousands of students to college and restored lands to a condition that is as much as 20 times more productive than native range.” They added, “Renewables won’t come close to matching the scale of these benefits.” But many Navajos see the waning of coal as inevitable and are already looking ahead. Some residents and communities are joining together or pairing with outside companies to pursue small-scale renewable energy projects on their own. Wahleah Johns, a member of the new Navajo Green Economy Commission, is studying the feasibility of a small solar project on reclaimed mining lands with two associates. In the meantime, she uses solar panels as a consciousness-raising tool. “How can we utilize reclamation lands?” she said to Mr. Yazzie during a recent visit as they held their young daughters in his living room. “Maybe we can use them for solar panels to generate electricity for Los Angeles, to transform something that’s been devastating for our land and water into something that can generate revenue for your family, for your kids.” Mr. Yazzie, who lives with his wife, three children and two brothers, said he liked the idea. “Once Peabody takes all the coal out, it’ll be gone,” he said. “Solar would be long-term. Solar and wind, we don’t have a problem with. It’s pretty windy out here.” Gouranga TV: Aindra In Vrindavan – Kirtan 3Aindra In Vrindavan – Kirtan 3 H.H. Sivarama SwamiUnless we take care of the books and preach and read the books ourselves, unless we understand the philosophy, this Hare Krishna will be finished within a few years, because there will be no life. - Srila Prabhupada Japa Group: Free From This HankeringThe taste of the Hare Krishna mantra can be tasted by one who is free from material hankering. Everyone in this material world is hankering for material enjoyment, but one who is free from this hankering can taste how relishable the Bhagavatam is. The word Bhagavata refers to anything in relationship to Bhagavan, the Supreme Lord, and the Hare Krishna mantra is also bhagavata. From Bhajan Kutir #124 More Recent Articles |
