Prison staff feared their colleague, locked in a room and being attacked by crazed extremists, was facing the same gruesome death as murdered soldier Lee Rigby.

Leading the thugs was al-Qaeda fanatic Parviz Khan, serving life for plotting to behead a Muslim member of the Army – and thought to be the inspiration for last week’s horrific slaughter.

The terrified officer, in his 30s, was finally freed by a specialist riot squad who stormed the room where he was held for five hours and beaten mercilessly by the extremists, who told him he would die.

And the vicious assault was sparked by a simple call from a prison imam to pray for drummer Lee who was ­butchered in the street last week near his barracks in ­Woolwich, South East London.

Khan flew into a rage at the request, insisting the 25-year-old’s murder was justified.

Recruiting two fellow Muslims, an African-born fanatic and a British convert, they kidnapped the guard on Sunday and bundled him into a cleaning room at Full Sutton jail near York.

Once inside, he was battered senseless with mop handles. The yobs threatened to pour caustic toilet cleaner into his eyes.

A prison source said last night: “The fear was that the gang had somehow got hold of knives from the prison kitchen and they would attempt to behead him.

“It was organised and inspired by the terrible death of Lee Rigby. Khan wanted to start a riot and after taking a hostage he was shouting for ‘true Muslims’ to join a holy war.

"He was the ringleader and the main person behind the savage beating of the prison officer, who feared for his life.

“By the time the attack finished the officer was covered in bruises and blood.

“He feels very lucky to be alive. He was told they would kill him.”

The guard was taken to hospital with serious injuries. He is believed to have been allowed home to recover but is expected to be off work for several weeks.

Ahmed Abassi, a 26-year-old Laval University student, was allegedly in regular contact with the agent, who secretly recorded them discussing a plot to attack a Via Rail passenger train.

MONTREAL—Supporters of Ahmed Abassi, a Tunisian man allegedly linked to a foiled Canadian terror plot, say an undercover FBI agent posing as an Egyptian businessman provided money, advice and the promise of a job if Abassi would come to the United States.
U.S. court documents have already revealed that an undercover agent played a crucial role in the arrest of Abassi, a 26-year-old student at Quebec’s Laval University.

Abassi was allegedly in regular contact with the agent, who secretly recorded them discussing a plot to attack a Via Rail passenger train; to cause the death of “up to 100,000 people” by contaminating the air or water; to provide financial support and weapons to anti-government fighters in Syria, and how to recruit other terrorists in North America.

But a Facebook page set up days after his arrest on immigration charges was announced says the FBI agent actually lured Abassi to New York, and to his eventual arrest, after his Canadian student visa was cancelled.

That unexplained immigration problem prevented Abassi from returning home with his new wife to their apartment in Quebec City and from continuing his studies.
The detailed account of the months leading up to Abassi’s arrest on April 22 at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport — which includes a video interview with Abassi’s sister — make two notable claims.

First, that American law enforcement agents may have enticed a suspected terrorist to enter the U.S. in order to further an investigation. Second, that an undercover FBI agent may have been operating on Canadian soil as part of that probe.
The two countries have a mutual legal assistance treaty that lets forces in either Canada or the U.S. pursue an investigation across the border as long as they are under the host country’s command. Authorities on both sides of the border have already acknowledged their close co-operation in the probe.

The case summary, which is posted in Arabic, English and French said the “tension and anxiety” over the cancellation of Abassi’s Canadian student visa was compounded by a serious car accident that left a brother in a Tunisian hospital. That stress, it said, was partially relieved by the promises made a mysterious Egyptian entrepreneur in New York whom Abassi knew as Thamer Al-Nouri.
According to the Facebook case summary, Abassi first met Al-Nouri in August 2012 through Chiheb Esseghaier, a Montreal engineering student and alleged co-conspirator who was also arrested April 22 along with Toronto man Raed Jaser. Both are charged with conspiring to commit terrorist acts in Canada.
Abassi and Al-Nouri met again a few weeks later, once more in Quebec, when the Egyptian arrived on a purported house-hunting tour. But their relationship appears to have blossomed when Abassi found himself stranded in Tunisia in late January.
The Facebook account claims Al-Nouri sent money to help Abassi’s convalescing brother and then suggested he come to the United States to be closer to his wife. Al-Nouri also promised him a job and a lawyer to deal with the Canadian visa problem, and he took care of the U.S. work visa application, the account claims.
Abassi was reluctant but was later convinced to accept the offer after Al-Nouri persuaded the man’s wife and mother that this was the best option for him.
“Faced with no clear response from the Canadian Embassy in Tunis about his visa file, he was forced to accept the proposition to travel to the United States,” the summary said.
A spokesperson with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New York would not comment on the claims made on the Facebook page. Sabrina Shroff, Abassi’s American lawyer, also would not comment. The Toronto Star’s requests for interviews with Abassi’s sister, his wife and the administrator of the Facebook page were either turned down or ignored.
Court documents corroborate some details of the Facebook summary, including the cover story that the agent was a businessman. After Abassi entered the U.S. in March 2013, they discussed visa requirements that would allow him to remain there, “purportedly in order to work for the (agent’s) U.S.-based company,” court documents state.
Upon his arrest, Abassi claimed to be working for the undercover agent’s company.
U.S. court documents say Abassi admitted to police under questioning that “he may have radicalized” Esseghaier, the accused Montreal plotter, as well as “discussed plots to poison a water system and to derail a passenger train.”

Never a dull moment. DEARBORN (WWJ) – Police in Dearborn are trying to understand why a pressure cooker was left in the restroom of the Adoba Hotel, forcing the evacuation of guests until the early morning hours.

The evacuation also canceled Sunday night’s banquet of the University of Muslim Association of America.

Asgar Zaidi of Washington D.C. has been attending the organization’s conference for the past 11 years. He says it’s the first time it’s ever been held in Dearborn.

“We all look forward to this time of year, Memorial Day weekend … we have fun, we learn and it’s just disheartening to see this type of stuff happen here,” said Zaidi.

The pressure cooker discovered at the hotel was detonated by police as a precaution, but contained no explosives.

A Michigan hotel was evacuated over the weekend after a pressure cooker was found while the hotel was hosting a conference for a Muslim group.

Police responded to the Adoba Hotel in Dearborn on Sunday night after the discovery was made in a bathroom.

At the time, the hotel was hosting a banquet for the Universal Muslim Association of America.

Conference participant Kasin Hasn told CBS Detroit: 'I don’t want to jump to any conclusions... pointing fingers at anybody, but I hate extremists just as much as everyone else hates extremists.

He added: 'It doesn’t matter what faith you are.'

A guest told WDIV-TV that the pressure cooker was found in a women's restroom.

The station reported that evacuated guests were given blankets and water as they stood out in the cold.

LONDON — Britain’s security agencies appeared headed for a period of deeply uncomfortable scrutiny after the government said Sunday that it had been aware for more than two years that one of the two men suspected of hacking an off-duty British soldier to death on a London street had ties to Al Qaeda.

A Foreign Office spokesman confirmed that the ministry had provided “consular assistance” in Kenya in 2010 to the man, Michael Adebolajo, 28, a British citizen of Nigerian descent. He had been arrested by the Kenyan police on suspicion of planning to join Al Shabab, an extremist group in Somalia that Britain has classified as a terrorist organization.

Mr. Adebolajo and the other suspect in the London attack — Michael Adebowale, 22, also of Nigerian origin — have been under armed police guard in separate London hospitals since the attack last Wednesday. The soldier — Lee Rigby, 25 — was run down by a car on the sidewalk outside an army barracks, then attacked with meat cleavers. Police officers arriving on the scene shot and wounded the two suspects.

The grisly brutality of the attack shocked Britain as few events have since the bombings on the London transit system on July 7, 2005, which killed 52 passengers and the four bombers. Sunday newspaper headlines about the case focused on what the government knew about Mr. Adebolajo and Mr. Adebowale and why no action was taken that might have prevented Mr. Rigby’s death.

In a statement on Sunday, the Foreign Office spokesman sought to tamp down the controversy, saying that the office’s role in the events in Kenya in November 2010 was limited to consular assistance to Mr. Adebolajo, “as normal for British nationals.” It did not address the Kenyan government’s statements that Mr. Adebolajo, using a false name, had been arrested near the Somali border with five Kenyan nationals while carrying Shabab literature.

The statement also did not address a claim made on BBC television on Friday night that Mr. Adebolajo spoke of rebuffing an attempt by MI5, the British domestic security agency, to recruit him. The claim was made by Ibrahim Hassan, a man who says he has links to Islamic extremist groups. Mr. Hassan said Mr. Adebolajo had told him that the recruitment attempt was made after he was deported from Kenya. British security officials quoted in the Sunday newspapers said that efforts to recruit Islamic extremists in such circumstances were common.

Mr. Hassan himself was arrested in the BBC studio immediately after the interview by Scotland Yard counterterrorism detectives, who said that the arrest was not connected to the killing of Mr. Rigby.

Mr. Hassan’s claims and his arrest added to a growing sense that inquiries into Mr. Rigby’s death are likely to delve into the murky world of the security agencies and their dealings with Islamic extremists.

A Parliamentary panel, the Intelligence and Security Committee, has said it expects to receive a preliminary report from the government on the attack this week.

Among the issues that the panel’s leading members have said they want to explore is whether MI5’s desire to penetrate groups with suspected terrorist ties had led to decisions not to prosecute people like Mr. Adebolajo under laws that bar Britons from engaging with terrorist organizations overseas. Security officials have said that MI5 viewed Mr. Adebolajo as posing a “low risk” of potential terrorism and did not think he needed close monitoring.

Security officials have also confirmed that Mr. Adebolajo, and to a more limited extent Mr. Adebowale, had been known to British security officials for several years because they took part in protests in Britain that were organized by extremist groups, some of which involved violent clashes with the police.

In an appearance on Fox News Sunday, senior Illinois Senator, Democrat Dick Durbin, expressed doubt as to whether bloggers deserve constitutional protection for their work online.

On the May 26 broadcast of the Sunday show, Durbin told host Chris Wallace that he wasn't sure if bloggers or "someone who is Tweeting" should be given protections under a media shield law.

Durbin noted that he was not prepared to ask for a special counsel to investigate Eric Holder and his snooping on the business and personal phone calls of nearly 100 reporters of the Associated Press, but he went further to question just whom a media shield law would cover.

But here is the bottom line--the media shield law, which I am prepared to support, and I know Sen. Graham supports, still leaves an unanswered question, which I have raised many times: What is a journalist today in 2013? We know it’s someone that works for Fox or AP, but does it include a blogger? Does it include someone who is tweeting? Are these people journalists and entitled to constitutional protection? We need to ask 21st century questions about a provision in our Constitution that was written over 200 years ago.

Durbin did not go on to attempt to clarify what those limits should be.

Vandals have daubed the word Islam in spray paint on war memorials in Green Park and Hyde Park in London.

Police were called to the RAF Bomber Command War Memorial at 05:00 BST and found engravings on the monument covered with paint.

Vandals did the same thing at the Animals in War Memorial in Hyde Park.

A police spokesman said Royal Parks officers were investigating and Westminster City Council had been informed.

Westminster City Council cabinet member for city management councillor Ed Argar said: "We deplore any act of vandalism or graffiti that desecrates memorials put in place to honour those who fought for our country's freedom.

"We will do everything we can to clean and restore the memorials as swiftly as possible."

The RAF Bomber Command pavilion, built at a cost of £6 million in Green Park, was opened in June 2012.

It commemorates the 55,573 members of the Bomber Command who lost their lives during World War II.

The Animals in War Memorial was designed by English sculptor David Backhouse and unveiled in 2004. It honours animals that have served and died for the British military forces.

TWO RAF jets were scrambled to intercept a Pakistani airliner after two passengers allegedly declared: “We’re going to blow this plane up.” Stunned crew launched a terror alert yesterday afternoon after the men reportedly started a scuffle by trying to force their way into the cockpit of the Manchester-bound airline.

The Typhoon war jets flew out from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire and escorted the Boeing 777 and its 297 passengers to Stansted in Essex.

Two British nationals aged 30 and 41 — who are said to be of Pakistani descent — were last night being held on suspicion of endangering an aircraft as cops scoured the plane for suspicious items. This latest terror scare follows the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby by Muslim fanatics.

The Pakistan International Airlines flight left Lahore at 9.35am local time and was due in at Manchester at 2pm before being diverted.Passengers were told bad weather had caused the diversion before learning the truth once they had landed safely.

Church buildings have been attacked and the homes of Christians looted in the aftermath of a bloody coup by a band of Muslim rebels in the Central African Republic (CAR) - more here.

Christians in the Central African Republic (CAR) are being targeted by Islamist militants who seized control of the country in March; they are being tied up, beaten and forced to hand over money to save their lives.

A pastor in CAR said that “a reign of terror” is being conducted against Christians by the Seleka rebels who took over the country in a bloody coup on 24 March. A number of Christians have been killed or wounded.

The church leader said that the rebels have a hit list of pastors and other Christian workers, and that places of worship are being attacked. Christian property is being looted. In one incident towards the end of last month, Seleka troops seized all the collection money given at a gathering of church leaders.  

Many Christians have fled their homes to the countryside and are too fearful to return. More than 200,000 people are internally displaced, while 49,000 refugees have been registered in neighbouring countries.

On 10 May, Human Rights Watch (HRW) released a report citing “grave violations” committed by the Seleka rebels against civilians, including pillage, summary executions, rape and torture.

Among the incidents described was a raid on a church in the capital Bangui. HRW said that this was one of Seleka’s first targets upon entering the city. The rebels fired into the air and robbed the worshippers.

HRW also recounted an attack on a funeral procession on the Ngaragba Bridge in Bangui on 13 April. As Seleka forces opened fire on the crowd, a church leader was killed as he appealed for calm. An eyewitness said:

[He] walked toward the Seleka elements on their pick-up raising a Bible in his hand and calling to stop shooting… [he] was shot dead by two Seleka fighters.

The crisis in CAR has largely slipped under the radar of the world’s media, and the predominantly Christian population feels abandoned by the international community.   

Last week, the United Nations envoy to CAR, Margaret Vogt, urged the Security Council to consider the deployment of a security force to “contain the current state of anarchy” and also the imposition of sanctions on rebels accused of severe rights violations.

She said that there was a “total disregard for international law, as elements of Seleka turn their vengeance against the population”.

The president decided last Thursday – five years into his presidency – to finally address the gravest threat to our nation and the West in the wake of a bloody wave of jihad attacks under his sloppy and feckless watch.

He said, “Victory will be measured in parents taking their kids to school; immigrants coming to our shores; fans taking in a ballgame; a veteran starting a business; a bustling city street.”

What does that even mean? He speaks of “victory” when he is the architect of defeat. He speaks of victory while the Fort Hood victims languish and slaughtering jihadist Nidal Hasan still has not been brought to trial, but has received more than a quarter-of-a-million dollars in compensation. He speaks of victory when he won’t even call the jihad attack on a London street “terrorism,” instead terming it “senseless violence.”

Jihad beheading victim Lee Rigby will receive the same tribute as soldiers who die in action, but Fort Hood jihad victims are victims of a “criminal act of single individual,” not international terrorism. Why would Obama authorize a drone hit on Anwar al-Awlaki (who never killed anyone) but not give the victims of his Islamic preachings the same military designation?

What is his plan? It’s to partner with Muslim Brotherhood groups in America that work feverishly to “eliminate and destroy” America from within. Obama said Thursday that “the best way to prevent violent extremism is to work with the Muslim American community – which has consistently rejected terrorism – to identify signs of radicalization, and partner with law enforcement when an individual is drifting toward violence.”

Work with the Muslim American community? Just as Obama said this, former Hamas-CAIR official Cyrus McGoldrick urged Muslims not to talk to law enforcement. “And never let them in your home.” This is Hamas-CAIR’s policy as well. They urge Muslims not to cooperate with the authorities. Really, Obama? You’re counting on these Islamic supremacists?

Robert Spencer said, “The Muslim American community has consistently rejected terrorism? Four separate studies since 1998 have all found that 80 percent of U.S. mosques were teaching jihad, Islamic supremacism, and hatred and contempt for Jews and Christians. … And in the summer of 2011 came another study showing that only 19 percent of mosques in U.S. don’t teach jihad violence and/or Islamic supremacism.”

But Obama wants to work with the Muslim American community – despite the fact that all the major Muslim groups in the U.S. are linked in various ways to the Muslim Brotherhood, which is dedicated in its own words to “eliminating and destroying Western civilization from within.” What’s his plan? To close Gitmo and release the killers, when we know the recidivism rate is extraordinarily high. He stands by his drone attacks while having denied the motive of jihadic doctrine. He is killing Americans and yet he whines that we “compromised our basic values – by using torture to interrogate our enemies.”

He is denigrating the Bush administration’s waterboarding of three killers that saved thousands of lives and led to the killing of Osama bin Laden. Our soldiers are waterboarded so they understand the process. Who does this poser think he’s kidding? He kills people, spies on journalists and abandons our ambassador and other Americans in Libya, and he is preaching to us?

Obama says that there have been no large-scale attacks in the U.S. I disagree. Scores of large scale attacks were thwarted. That counts. And Fort Hood and Boston were large scale. Hundreds of people living with shrapnel, broken flesh and bone – and the dead.

Our delusional president claims our standing in the world is what it was. I beg to differ. We are much weaker under his reign. Obama’s abandonment of our allies in Egypt, Libya, Israel and Eastern Europe has weakened our hegemony and influence in those regions. And he has effectively surrendered to the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Obama claims that “unrest in the Arab World has also allowed extremists to gain a foothold in countries like Libya and Syria.” That, too, is a deliberate misrepresentation of what happened. Obama backed jihadists. That’s what happened in the Muslim world. Did he think that backing jihadists in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and now Syria would end well?

He said: ‘There is a problem with Prevent at many universities, partly because it comes from government and partly because it is seen as anti-Muslim. It needs to be refocused much more clearly as being opposed to extremism of both right and left." Very dangerous -- the right aren't beheading people in the streets or blowing themselves up on buses.

Universities were under pressure tonight to crack down on Islamic extremists who spout hatred on campuses.

An investigation has been launched into claims that a series of radical speakers were invited to events and distributed leaflets to students at the University where both killers are thought to have studied.

The probe will consider whether Greenwich University’s Islamic society had any role in radicalising Michael Adebolajo, 28 and Michael Adebowale, 22.

Claims have been made that a pamphlet written by a preacher who was banned from entering Britain by the Home Secretary was distributed during a freshers' fair at Greenwich University

Home Secretary Theresa May yesterday pledged to look at introducing new powers to tackle Al Qaeda sympathisers who try to recruit impressionable students at colleges.

She has criticised universities for being ‘complacent’ in tackling the risk of radicalisation.

One of Drummer Lee Rigby’s killers, Michael Adebolajo, 28, converted to Islam in 2003 at the same time that he studied at the University of Greenwich. 

He was radicalised by the banned group Al-Muhajiroun.

His accomplice in the gruesome murder outside Woolwich Barracks, Michael Adebowale, 22, is also said to have been an undergraduate there and studied on a business course.

The announcement of the investigation came amid claims that a pamphlet written by a preacher who was banned from entering Britain by the Home Secretary in 2010 was distributed during a freshers’ fair at Greenwich University in 2011. 

Dr Zakir Naik, the author, said in the booklet: 'Every Muslim should be a terrorist,’ it was alleged.

Dr Naik had been banned from entering Britain the previous year by Theresa May after she ruled that his presence was 'not conducive to the public good'.

Other figures known for their extreme views are said to have appeared in person at the university, including Dr Khalid Fikry, who has supported convicted terrorists.

The society has also promoted videos by another radical preacher, Abu Usamah, on its Facebook page.

Abu Usamah, a Birmingham based imam, featured on the Channel 4 Dispatches programme Undercover Mosque in which he expressed support for Osama bin Laden and said homosexuals were 'perverted, filthy dogs who should be murdered'.

He has been banned from several academic institutions for his extreme views.

Professor David Maguire, vice-chancellor of the university, confirmed that Adebolajo had been a student there for two years but had been thrown out because his ‘academic progress was unsatisfactory’.

He said: ‘The university takes its responsibilities very seriously in terms of preventing extremism.

‘We are committed to ensuring that the university is a safe and secure place of study and debate within the confines of the law.

'We have diverse communities on campus and these include a range of different faiths.

‘Given the seriousness of issues raised, the university is setting up an investigation into the association of these two individuals with the university, to assess whether there is any evidence of extremism in the university (past or present) and whether we need to update our policies and practices.’

Professor Maguire said the university had ‘no record’ of Adebowale being a student at Greenwich.

Mrs May is determined to stop extremist clerics using schools, colleges and universities - as well as prisons and mosques - to spread their ‘poison’.

She said: ‘We need to look across institutions like universities, whether there is more work we can be doing in prisons.’

Universities UK, which represents higher education institutions, is drawing up guidelines on how to handle preachers who have a track record of inciting hatred.

It has launched a new campaign to show students, unions and academics what they can do to constrain controversial preachers.

The last Labour government introduced its Prevent strategy in a bid to stop young people becoming involved with extremist groups but ministers acknowledged this has stalled.

Rupert Sutton, from Student Rights, an organisation aimed at preventing extremism at universities, said he hoped chancellors would draw up lists of speakers liable to preach hatred or violence.

He said: ‘There is a problem with Prevent at many universities, partly because it comes from government and partly because it is seen as anti-Muslim.

In January it was revealed that Islamic extremists preached at more than 200 university events last year raising fresh fears over radicalisation on campus.
