keeping on trend with today’s earlier post, how do you feel about a little urban decay? rustic floors, exposed brick and patchy walls that are anything but perfect can add a lot of interest. and sometimes rather than patch them up or refinish them, how about a make-under and enhance the patina that age brought on all on its own? could you live with that — or is it just too rough around the edges for you? paired with modern furnishings, i rather like it in small doses — it makes for a nice study in contrast.
i’m not a huge fan of what might be considered ‘traditional country’ decor per se, but i do like it when it gets a bit quirky — and designer John Derian’s beach home certainly has that. it’s filled with unusual vintage finds, much like the collections he shares in his new york shop, and now one in the coastal summer resort town of Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he’s also bought this funky old 1930’s house. featured in architectural digest espana, i love the very intentional rustic look — unfinished floors, overstuffed comfy furniture and mismatched textiles, vintage portraits and gorgeous antique area rugs. together they create that perfect, casual beach house vibe — the ideal retreat for summer and weekends away from the big bad city. and that makeshift ping pong table? love it!
