Revenues received by the federal government in 2024 totaled $4.9 trillion, of which almost half was receipts from individual income taxes.

    

Discretionary outlays by the federal government totaled $1.8 trillion in 2024. Outlays for nondefense programs accounted for more than half of that total.

    

Mandatory outlays by the federal government totaled $4.1 trillion in 2024; more than half was for Social Security and Medicare. The largest increases over the past 20 years have been for the major health care programs.

    

The federal deficit in 2024 was $1.8 trillion, equal to 6.4 percent of gross domestic product.
