The federal deficit in 2017 was $665 billion, equal to 3.5 percent of gross domestic product.

    

Mandatory spending by the federal government totaled $2.5 trillion in 2017, of which $1.6 trillion was for Social Security and Medicare.

    

Discretionary spending by the federal government totaled $1.2 trillion in 2017—about half for national defense and half for nondefense activities.

    

Revenues received by the federal government in 2017 totaled $3.3 trillion, of which $1.6 trillion was receipts of individual income taxes.
