Volunteer Intern - Human Resources

The Human Resources Department seeks a professional intern with a strong work ethic to assist in various areas of human resources for a 10-week period during the summer. The successful candidate will report to the Human Resources Director and provide support as part of a 4-person HR shop. Duties are varied - HR interns are full members of the team who take on substantive projects which include working with federal benefits, recruitment support, personnel records management, and special projects. As an intern with CBO, you’ll also have an opportunity to sit in on Congressional hearings and attend lectures on Capitol Hill by people such as former Secretary of State Colin Powell, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and journalist Cokie Roberts. Required Skills Candidates should be working toward a master’s degree in human resource management, industrial organizational psychology, business, or a related field. Those who hold a bachelor’s degree may also be considered. The candidate should have the ability to handle multiple simultaneous tasks and complete projects under tight deadlines. Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to deal discreetly with confidential information are a must. The position also requires a person who is flexible and can work well as a part of a team. Training/experience in human resources is desirable but not required. Full-time preferred but we will consider people who can commit to a part-time schedule of at least 20 hours per week. Volunteer Intern - Graphic Design for the Web

The Web Unit in the Office of Communications seeks an intern with a strong work ethic to perform various tasks in support of CBO’s Web site for a 10-week period during the summer. The successful candidate will report to the Managing Web Editor as part of a 3-person web shop and work with web staff to produce charts and other visual displays of statistical information for the website. The intern will also work with analysts to develop the agency’s infographics and other bespoke visualizations. You’ll also get a chance to attend a bunch of cool events on Capitol Hill with other interns. You probably won’t see Jonathan Ive wandering the halls, but you can attend lectures by people like former Secretary of State Colin Powell, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and journalist Cokie Roberts. Required Skills Candidates should have completed a minimum of 2 years of college (or equivalent credits) with formal training in graphic arts / graphic design and expertise with Adobe Creative Suites software. An interest in the visual display of statistical information is highly desirable. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are a must. Volunteer Intern - Web Developer

The Web Unit in the Office of Communications seeks a volunteer intern with a strong work ethic to perform various tasks in support of CBO’s website for a 10-week period during the summer. The successful candidate will report to the Managing Web Editor as part of a 3-person web shop to help to transform one of CBO’s traditional print-oriented publications into a web app. Web team interns are full members of the team who take on substantive projects. (Past interns have completely revamped our ‘about us’ pages and created the agency’s first infographic.) You’ll be doing most of the front-end work on converting one of our regular publications into a web app. Several thousand people will use your app each month, and you’ll end up with (at least one) great item for your portfolio. You’ll also get a chance to attend a bunch of cool events on Capitol Hill with other interns. You probably won’t see Mark Zuckerberg wandering the halls, but you can attend lectures by people like former Secretary of State Colin Powell, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and journalist Cokie Roberts. Required Skills Successful candidates must have: A minimum of 2 years of college (or equivalent credits) Detailed knowledge of HTML and CSS, including an understanding of what ‘HTML5’ means (and why it is in quotation marks) JavaScript experience (including, but not limited to, jQuery) The ability to translate wireframes and/or PSD designs into valid sites A love of web standards (blue beanie optional, but desirable) The patience to ensure that your site works in IE (7 and up) The ability to work independently and as part of a team Strong communication and interpersonal skills An interest in public policy, economics, or the federal budget The ideal candidate will also have experience working with Drupal, proficiency in XML/XSL and AJAX, PHP expertise, and a willingness to take on whatever needs to be done, even when it’s outside your comfort zone. Volunteer Intern - Communications

The Office of Communications seeks an intern with a strong work ethic to assist with the agency's media relations and public affairs. The successful candidate will report to the Associate Director for Communications and will serve as a key member of the communications team. Duties include responding to phone and e-mail inquiries from the media and general public on a wide range of topics, attending and preparing for congressional hearings, and working on other communications projects as needed. Previous communications interns have served a front-line role representing CBO and have interacted regularly with staff across the agency as part of performing their day-to-day responsibilities. In addition to attending hearings, you'll also get a chance to attend events on Capitol Hill with other interns, such as lectures by people like former Secretary of State Colin Powell, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and journalist Cokie Roberts. Required Skills Candidates should be working toward a master's degree in journalism, mass communications, radio-television, or a related field with a strong focus or interest in government and/or political science. Students in their senior year or who hold a bachelor's degree may also be considered. Candidates must thrive in a fast-paced environment and be able to effectively handle multiple tasks and complete projects under tight deadlines. Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are required. Previous experience in journalism or media relations is desired and familiarity with, and interest in, social media would be a plus.
