
The Macroeconomic Analysis Division is seeking to fill the management position of Chief of the Fiscal Policy Studies Unit. The Macroeconomic Analysis Division analyzes the macroeconomic effects of federal fiscal policy, studies emerging developments in the U.S. economy, and prepares CBO’s semi-annual economic forecast. The main responsibilities of the Fiscal Policy Studies Unit are to produce estimates of the macroeconomic impacts of federal fiscal policy and to communicate them to the Congress and the public. In those tasks it collaborates with other members of the Division responsible for economic projections and with other CBO staff. The successful candidate will supervise a staff of about seven economists in the Unit and contribute to the management of the Division as a whole. Key responsibilities include identifying issues in fiscal policy that may require attention and research, providing leadership and direction to analysts in the research and write-up of such analyses, and overseeing the development of economic models used for policy analysis. Qualifications Ideal candidates will have at least ten years of experience in analyzing the economic effects of fiscal policy and familiarity with state-of-the-art economic models used for fiscal policy analysis, such as overlapping generations models. A Ph.D. in economics or equivalent experience, a deep interest in contributing to the policy debate, and the ability to work well in a fluid policy environment are also necessary. The position also requires a person with outstanding leadership, research, and management skills. The successful candidate must have the ability to manage projects and to motivate and direct a strong professional staff. Solid communication skills are essential, especially the ability to communicate technical material in a clear and concise manner both orally and in writing.
