Human Resources Specialist-Benefits

CBO seeks a human resources specialist as part of a busy, tight-knit, four-person human resources team that is focused on customer service, reliability, and efficiency. The successful candidate will provide the full range of professional and technical duties related to federal benefits programs (retirement, health, life and other insurances, Thrift Savings Plan, flexible spending accounts, etc.). Responsibilities include confidential handling of day-to-day benefits processing and counseling, coordination with OPM, other agencies, and third-party providers, reporting, records management, and special projects. The successful candidate will report to the Human Resources Director and, in addition to benefits, will be responsible for timekeeping and other human resources support.   Qualifications Applicants must have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in federal benefits administration and a solid understanding of applicable laws, regulations, etc. Strong computer, spreadsheet, and analytical/problem solving skills are required. Also required are the ability to multi-task, organize, and meet strict deadlines. A high degree of accuracy, ability to conduct thorough research, and demonstrated attention to detail are essential. The candidate should be a conscientious, self-starter with excellent follow through and communication skills and be able to work well as part of a team.   Experience is desired in: timekeeping, human resource information systems, and the National Finance Center payroll system. A bachelor’s degree in human resources, business, or a related discipline and an understanding of other human resources functions such as compensation or recruitment are also preferred.   Candidate must have, or be able to get, a favorably adjudicated Public Trust Investigation which includes a credit check. Volunteer Human Resources Intern

The Human Resources Department seeks a professional intern with a strong work ethic to assist in various areas of human resources during the spring semester on a part-time volunteer basis (unpaid).  The successful candidate will report to the Human Resources Director and provide support as part of a 3-person HR shop.  Duties are varied - HR interns are full members of the team who take on substantive projects which include working with federal benefits, recruitment support, personnel records management, and special projects. Qualifications Candidates should be working toward master’s degree in human resource management, industrial organizational psychology, business, or a related field. We may also consider students who are completing their final year towards a bachelor’s degree. The candidate should have the ability to handle multiple simultaneous tasks and complete projects under tight deadlines. Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to deal discreetly with confidential information are a must. The position also requires a person who is flexible and can work well as a part of a team. Training/experience in human resources is desirable but not required. We are looking for an individual who can commit to a part-time schedule of at least 12 hours per week. Unpaid internships can only be offered to students whose universities sponsor internships with federal agencies. Such sponsorship does not require the student to receive compensation from the university, nor does it require the university to offer class credit for the internship. The university must be willing to complete CBO’s sponsorship form stating that it is sponsoring the student for an unpaid internship at CBO which will be of educational benefit to the participant. Students must verify for themselves that their university is willing to sponsor the internship before applying but will only be required to submit the sponsorship form if the student is offered an internship.
