The Budget Analysis Division is seeking an intern to work a minimum of 12 hours per week in its State and Local Cost Estimates Unit during the fall of 2013. This is an opportunity to be involved in helping to carry out CBO’s responsibilities under the Unfunded Mandates Reform Act to identify and quantify the effects of federal legislation on other levels of government. Members of the unit work closely with Congressional staff and representatives of state, local, and tribal governments in preparing those analyses, which play a significant role in the consideration of legislation by the Congress. The intern’s primary responsibilities will include helping to: • Prepare estimates on the impact of federal legislation on the budgets of state, local, and tribal governments dealing with natural resources, veterans’ benefits, and general government programs; • Support the work of other analysts in the unit with background research, potentially in the areas of transportation and immigration; and • Track, analyze, and document financial data from state and local governments. Qualifications The ideal candidate will be adept at identifying and evaluating information that will help explain the potential effects of legislation and able to distill that information into a concise, readable format. Candidates for this position should be working toward or have recently completed a graduate degree in public policy, public administration, public affairs, or economics. This position requires someone with strong analytical and writing skills, and the ability to complete projects under tight deadlines. Familiarity with state or local finance and legislative analysis would be a plus. Salary, Benefits, and Term Hourly rate begins at $17 per hour and will be based on academic level and related experience. Compensation includes a local transportation subsidy. This internship will begin in September 2013 and end in December 2013, with the possibility that the term of employment might be extended. It is preferred that the intern work approximately 20 hours per week, however we will consider candidates who can commit to at least 12 hours per week. If feasible, the specific work schedule will be designed to accommodate the individual’s academic or other commitments. How to Apply Please submit a cover letter, résumé, brief writing sample, unofficial transcript, and contact information for two (2) references online by September 3, 2013 to ensure consideration. Only complete applications will be considered.
