New From CBO

Macroeconomist

The Macroeconomic Analysis Division generates CBO’s economic projections that underlie the agency’s 10-year budget projections, studies major developments in the economy, and analyzes the economic effects of fiscal policy. The division is seeking a macroeconomist with a broad range of related skills and interests. Recent and ongoing work in the division suggests the scope of those interests: hysteresis in the labor market, a new model of business investment, revisions to CBO’s estimate of potential output, and the crowding out of investment by the federal deficit.    The successful candidate will contribute to the division's responsibilities. Those include constructing, improving, and using cutting-edge models that underlie CBO’s short-term and long-term economic projections; analyzing current economic developments; conducting policy analysis; and analyzing  trends in the economy and writing studies about them. The successful candidate will be expected to interact with both academic and nonacademic economists, as analysts regularly get feedback from outside economists, including those on CBO’s Panel of Economic Advisers (www.cbo.gov/publication/44160) and other top economists around the world. The successful candidate will also be encouraged to pursue independent research projects related to CBO’s broad mission and present this work at conferences and publish it in peer-reviewed journals.  Qualifications Applicants must have a Ph.D. in economics or a closely related discipline. Economists who have a broad range of macroeconomic skills and policy interests are encouraged to apply. Special consideration will be given to candidates who have experience with forecasting macroeconomic developments and analyzing the effects of fiscal policy on the economy. Excellent empirical and modeling skills as well as interpersonal and writing skills (including the ability to communicate technical material in a clear manner) are essential. Successful candidates will be able to work independently and complete work in a timely manner. Both junior- and senior-level candidates will be considered. Non US citizens should view Citizenship Eligibility Requirements or contact careers@cbo.gov for assistance in determining eligibility. Salary and Benefits Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with experience, education, and other qualifications. CBO offers excellent benefits and an appealing work environment.   How to Apply Please submit a cover letter, résumé, salary history, writing sample, and contact information for three (3) references online at www.cbo.gov/careers. Recent graduates should submit an unofficial copy of academic transcripts and have letters of recommendation sent to careers@cbo.gov in place of references. Only complete applications will be considered.
