The Health, Retirement, and Long-Term Analysis Division (HRLD) is seeking an Assistant Analyst to provide research assistance and technical support to the division’s staff of economists and public policy analysts. Typical activities include statistical analyses, programming support, graphics production, literature reviews, and quality assurance reviews. Following their two- to three-year term appointments at the agency, assistant analysts frequently pursue professional or graduate degrees in such fields as economics, public policy, medicine, or law. HRLD analyzes federal programs and policies that focus on health, health care, and retirement, including Medicare, Medicaid, subsidies provided through health insurance exchanges established under the Affordable Care Act, population health initiatives, and Social Security. The division produces reports on a range of policy issues and options and analyzes the budgetary effects of proposed legislation. HRLD is also responsible for CBO’s long-term budget projections and collaborates with other divisions on analyses of the long-term effects of proposed legislation. Qualifications Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree with a major or minor in economics or a related discipline. The position requires a person who can work well with more senior analysts on multiple projects, gather appropriate data to address policy questions, conduct spreadsheet and statistical analyses, assist with slide presentations and written reports, and complete assignments in a timely manner. Candidates must have strong quantitative, writing, and computer skills (with experience using programs such as STATA and/or SAS, Excel, Powerpoint, and Word) and a desire to work on issues of current legislative interest to the Congress. This position is only for those with or obtaining a bachelor’s degree; it is not for those who have, or are completing, a master’s degree. Salary and Benefits The salary range is from $39,000 to $44,000; the salary will be commensurate with education and related experience. CBO offers excellent benefits and an appealing work environment. How to Apply Please submit a cover letter, résumé, a brief writing sample, unofficial transcripts, and contact information for three references online. Only complete applications will be considered. Although there is no deadline, this position may be closed when CBO has received a sufficient number of applications from qualified candidates. This position is governed by the Veterans Employment Opportunities Act, as made applicable by the Congressional Accountability Act, as amended. Because this position is covered by the Veterans Employment Opportunities Act, the following categories of people may be eligible for preference in the hiring process relative to other applicants: veterans who have separated from the armed forces under honorable conditions after serving on active duty in the armed forces during a war, in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized, or during particular defined periods; disabled veterans; and the mother, spouse, or unmarried widow or widower of certain veterans.
