Assistant Analyst - Microeconomic Studies

The Microeconomic Studies Division (MSD) is seeking candidates for an entry-level assistant analyst position to provide the unit’s economists with statistical analyses, graphics, literature reviews, and other research assistance. The position is for a period not to exceed three years—ideal for those interested in substantive work experience before attending graduate school. MSD analyzes the budgetary and economic effects of federal policies covering a wide variety of issues, including energy, the environment, and public infrastructure. Recently completed work includes reports analyzing federal financial support for the development, production, and use of fuels and energy technologies; assessing the effects on energy and food prices of the renewable fuel standards for gasoline and diesel fuel; and examining trends in public spending on transportation and water infrastructure. Following their appointments (for two- or three-year terms) at the agency, assistant analysts frequently pursue professional or graduate degrees in fields such as economics or public policy. Qualifications Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree with a major or minor in economics or a related discipline. The position requires a person who can work well with senior staff members, take the initiative to gather suitable data to address policy questions, conduct spreadsheet and statistical analyses, assist with presentations and written reports, and complete assignments in a timely manner. Candidates must have strong quantitative, communication, and computer skills (with programs such as STATA) and a desire to work on issues that interest the Congress. This position is only for candidates who have or are obtaining a bachelor’s degree; it is not for those who have, or are completing, a master’s degree. Salary and Benefits The salary range is $39,000 to $44,000; the salary will be commensurate with education and related experience. CBO offers excellent benefit s and an appealing work environment.
