CBO’s Macroeconomic Analysis Division seeks a macroeconomist to work on a wide range of projects, including economic forecasting and analysis of fiscal policy. The division analyzes emerging developments in the economy, prepares semiannual forecasts of the U.S. economy, and assesses the macroeconomic effects of federal fiscal policy. The division has recently analyzed the connection between federal investment and private-sector productivity, how changes in immigration law could affect the economy, the global economy and international trade, and the economic effects of health care reform. The successful candidate will have a broad range of interests and an ability to contribute to the full range of the division’s work. The position’s duties include analyzing a broad range of issues, contributing to CBO’s recurring reports, and conducting original research. Other responsibilities include constructing and improving the cutting-edge models that underlie CBO’s policy analyses, preparing longer-term studies, and assisting with the dynamic analysis of specific pieces of legislation (sometimes called dynamic scoring). Active participation in the research community is encouraged. CBO staff members present papers at conferences, publish in professional journals, and circulate preliminary research through CBO’s working paper series. Qualifications Applicants must have a Ph.D. in economics or a closely related discipline, such as public policy or applied statistics, or a master’s degree with at least five years’ experience in macroeconomic forecasting, fiscal policy analysis, or macroeconomic consulting. Excellent quantitative, writing, and interpersonal skills are essential—including the ability to communicate technical material clearly to a variety of audiences—as are the ability to work independently and to complete projects under tight deadlines. Applications will be accepted from junior- and senior-level candidates. Noncitizens of the United States should review the agency’s citizenship requirements or contact careers@cbo.gov for help in determining eligibility. Salary and Benefits The salary is competitive with comparable positions in the executive branch and will be commensurate with experience, education, and other qualifications. CBO offers excellent benefits and an appealing work environment. How to Apply Please submit a cover letter, résumé, brief writing sample, salary history, contact information for three references, and unofficial transcripts (if the degree is recent). Recent Ph.D. recipients should have confidential letters of recommendation sent to careers@cbo.gov in place of references. Only complete applications will be considered. Although there is no deadline, CBO may close the announcement after receiving a sufficient number of applications from qualified candidates.
