New From CBO

Visual Information and Production Specialist

The Editorial and Publishing Services unit, within the Management, Business, and Information Services Division , seeks a Visual Information and Production Specialist to help make technical and analytical publications clear and accessible to a broad audience.  The specialist will work with staff members throughout the agency on reports, graphics, slide decks, infographics, and presentations. Responsibilities include conceptualizing and precisely executing statistical graphics and data visualizations that are aesthetically pleasing; helping in their early development by attending meetings and reviewing drafts to recommend opportunities; crafting cohesive graphical stories; training others; and developing new capabilities for graphics. Responsibilities also include producing publications in CBO’s current production system, which relies on FrameMaker, Excel, DeltaGraph, Illustrator, and other tools. And, because the ways that people obtain information are changing, the specialist will help create new approaches to publishing that focus on the web (and a range of devices and formats). (CBO is also seeking a Digital Publishing and Data Visualization Specialist , who will take the lead in that effort.) Qualifications Candidates must have at least five years of  experience in graphic design, data visualization, and report production and a bachelor's or advanced degree. They must be proficient in Adobe products, Microsoft Office, and  statistical graphics and data visualization software. Experience with technical subjects and quantitative information presented in tables and graphs is required.  Experience as an editor (or with projects demonstrating editorial ability) is a plus. Success in the position will require superior attention to detail and producing highly accurate work, even when juggling several priorities, as well as collaborating well in a process for composition, review, and production that typically involves many people. Occasional evening and weekend work, usually with some notice, is necessary. Salary and Benefits The salary is competitive and will be commensurate with experience, education, and other qualifications. CBO offers excellent benefits and a collegial, respectful work environment. How to Apply Please submit a cover letter, résumé, salary history, two work samples (showing ability with statistical graphics or data visualization and with report layout or production), and contact information for three references. Apply by October 31, 2016, to ensure consideration. Candidates should be prepared to supply additional work samples and references upon request. Only complete applications will be considered. This position is covered by the Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 as made applicable to CBO by the Congressional Accountability Act, as amended.  Because this position is covered by the Veterans Employment Opportunities Act, the following categories of people may be eligible for preference in the hiring process relative to other applicants: veterans who have separated from the armed forces under honorable conditions after serving on active duty in the armed forces during a war, in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized, or during particular defined periods; disabled veterans; and the mother, spouse, or unmarried widow or widower of certain veterans. To claim this preference, an applicant must identify himself or herself as eligible for veterans' preference in the Self-Identification for Veterans' Preference section of the application and must complete and submit CBO's Veterans' Preference Eligibility Form together with the supporting documentation specified on that form to veoa@cbo.gov or faxed to 202-225-7539 within two weeks of applying or no later than the deadline specified for positions with deadlines. Applicants may obtain a copy of CBO's Veterans' Preference in Appointments policy by submitting a written request to careers@cbo.gov .
