CBO’s Budget Analysis Division, which is responsible for preparing cost estimates for legislative proposals, seeks an editor to provide substantive editing, copyediting, proofreading, and writing assistance to analysts as they prepare cost estimates. The editor will assist in making analytical and technical material clear and accessible to a broad audience—primarily Members of Congress, Congressional staff, and members of the public—and will oversee the timely production of those estimates. Qualifications Candidates must have at least four years of experience in editing professional publications similar to those produced at CBO and a bachelor’s or advanced degree, preferably in English or another field within the humanities. They must have broad editorial skills––ranging from being able to reliably guide authors organizing drafts of complex estimates to proofreading with a superior eye for detail. They must thoroughly understand English grammar and syntax, should be sensitive to style and to nuances of tone and meaning in writing and editing, and should have the ability to train new analysts to prepare clear, well-written cost estimates. Experience with technical subjects and quantitative information presented in tables and graphs is required. Familiarity with the federal budget process is strongly preferred. Strong interpersonal skills are important. So is the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously. Candidates must be able to handle pressing tasks under tight deadlines, and they must have the flexibility to work some evenings and weekends, as necessary. Please submit a cover letter, résumé, salary history, at least one editing sample (see the FAQs on CBO’s website for a description), and contact information for three references by close of business on September 12, 2017 to ensure consideration. Only complete applications will be considered.
