The Financial Analysis Division is seeking an economist to analyze the design and implementation of market and institutional mechanisms used by the federal government in a variety of areas of public policy.

Although the economist will be located in a division that is generally dedicated to financial programs and policies, they will also contribute to CBO’s mission beyond the traditional domain of finance. The economist will apply his or her knowledge of market and institutional mechanisms to analyze policy proposals in a wide variety of areas, including the following:

  • The purchase and sale of financial securities.
  • The structure of federal credit and insurance programs serving consumers and businesses.
  • The sale of environmental permits, such as for emissions of carbon dioxide; leases for federal natural resources; and transmission rights for bands of the electromagnetic spectrum.
  • The process for procuring goods and services for federal activities and programs.
  • Systems of bidding by health insurance plans that determine government subsidies.

Topics of analyses will shift over time, providing new opportunities to contribute.
