Fitness Update: The Bike Rodeo is back! March fitness logs due Wednesday

The Blythe Park Bike Safety Rodeo is Back!

Mrs. Jill Glawe and the Blythe Park PTA are excited to offer our students an exciting event for April’s Wellness Wednesday. Our Blythe Park Bike Safety Rodeo is back!  The rodeo will take place Wednesday April 22nd for grades 1-5 and Friday, April 24th for our kindergarten students.

Officer Brian Greenewald from the Riverside Police Department will speak to the students about bike safety and rules of the road for bicyclists.  Bike riding stations will be available to test students’ navigation skills.  Some of the stations include: a figure eight course, “slow race” to target balance, and a start and stop station. Additionally Mr. Tim Eckardt will speak to the students about taking care of your bike (i.e. how to fix the chain, check tires, lock it safely, etc.), and an adaptive bike will be on hand for the students to view. Children’s bikes will be made available so students will not have to bring their own.  Please note, though, that students must bring their own helmet to participate.

In addition to the Wellness Wednesday activities, the Illinois PTA has invited schools to participate in a statewide Bike Safety Challenge conducted by the League of Illinois Bicyclists. Students will complete an interactive, online quiz at www.BikeSafetyQuiz.com, The Bike Safety Quiz is fun and educational, with Secretary of State-approved questions about bicycle laws and safety techniques. The students go to BikeSafetyQuiz.com and select the appropriate quiz: Child Bicyclist.  They will be prompted to enter a class code.  Class codes are as follows:

Kindergarten-168600001

1st -168601001

2nd-168602001

3rd-168603001

4th-168604001

5th Pollock -168605001

5th Wydra-168606001

Students who finish can print a Certificate of Completion. Prizes will be offered to the class that has the most students participate in the quiz (please note that younger students may need help from their parents to take the quiz). A more detailed explanation of the quiz is attached to this email. This is a timely opportunity for Blythe Park!

The Blythe Park Bike Safety Rodeo is certain to be both a fun and important event.  If you have any questions regarding the rodeo, please feel free to contact Ms. Gorman or Mrs. Glawe.  Thank you!

Help support the 44th annual Hauser Can Food Drive

Hauser Jr. High has earned a tremendous reputation for generosity over the last 43 years, serving as the number one collector of food in Illinois.  Our school community has collected and donated over 1,600,000 non-perishable items to the food pantry to date, with over 70,000 food items donated last year!

The Salvation Army’s Red Shield food pantry located in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood is the recipient of the collection, and Hauser’s efforts sustain hundreds of families for six months.

The Salvation Army is counting on  the Hauser communit to fill the shelves again this year.  There is currently a pod in the Hauser parking lot that they are trying to fill.  Please help Hauser “Pack the PODS” to capacity!

To help Hauser, drop non-perishable items in the box located outside the Blythe Park office or drop them off on Saturday, April 18th from 9a-12pm in the Hauser parking lot.  For every 10 cans dropped off,  you will be entered into a raffle.  The Salvation Army’s Steel Drum band will be performing all morning.

If you prefer to make a monetary donation, you can either send a check or cash to the Hauser office (checks made payable to Hauser PTO) or click on the link below and use cheddar to make a payment with a credit card or PayPal account.
