Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: On My Shelf : Two New Cookbooks!

My cookbook collection is weak. I have a few go-to books, including Kurma’s standards, Yamuna Devi’s tome to the Indian culinary sub-continent, Miriam Kasin Hospodar’s cult classic Heaven’s Gate and  Better Homes & Gardens New Cookbook, so well worn in paperback that it is in multiple pieces. But that does not mean I am without interest in expanding my collection.

Books that interest me generally span the genres of vegan baking, the science behind the magic, Middle Eastern flava’ and, of course, the most recent edition of Better Homes & Gardens New Cookbook. Mine is 10 years old. And, as I mentioned, in multiple pieces.

For the holidays, my aunt gave me a bookstore gift card. Thank you Aunt Sheila! Emails I sent you bounced back, btw. I decided upon two cookbooks and they arrived recently. Want to know what I got?

The first one, Nonna’s Italian Kitchen by Bryanna Clark Grogan (the seitan turkey lady), I came across when I was cooking for The Client. I look forward to trying her gnocchi recipe because it’s vegan and I won’t have to figure stuff out or make modifications. Yippee!

This cookbook cover is so vegan. And Canadian. All mixed up into one.

The second was recommended to me by a Facebook friend and it is very heavily eggy, so although not the least bit surprised, I still manage to be kind of bummed about that. The America’s Test Kitchen Family Baking Book is supposed to be good, however, since all the recipes have been….tested. Ummm, yeah. We’ll see. From the looks of things, it appears as though I am not in urgent need of replacing the Better Homes & Gardens book because I use that one basically for baking recipes.

This cookbook is large–in breadth and in format. And it is full of information! And photographs! And tabs to organize the recipes! Okay. I am a little excited about it, just it will require some thinking in order to get into it and with new baby, I don’t have much think left in me.

TV show? Wait a minute. I didn't know there was a TV show!

Well, la-de-freaking-do! TV show. Just found out there is a website, too. WEBSITE! With recipes. RECIPES! So, don’t be a putz like me and use the gift card from your Aunt Sheila on this book since you can get most of the recipes free. Online. Happy Hanukkah.

Japa Group: A Long Term Habit Change

So to have a long term habit change…in other words we want to change our bad habit, once and for all, so that from this day forward we are always chanting with attention and never being distracted (or whatever behavior we want to do) and never slip back into the wrong chanting or the wrong behavior, wrong habit.

Devadeva Mirel, Alachua, USA: Enduring Design Classics : Bin Pulls & Farm Houses

Just outside Stockholm, Wisconsin, a modern custom farmhouse built amidst 40 meandering acres cuts the dramatic skyscape with the gentleness of a butter knife.  Simple in design yet high in function, this weekend getaway pays tribute to  the Swedish influenced mid-western sensibility of the region. Clean lines, nuetral colors, large windows, natural materials, high ceilings and built in cabinetry add to the design’s efficient grace.

ISKCON Melbourne, AU: Today's Darsana

02/02/11

Their Lordships are gradually revealing to us, day by day, Their pristine abode:
Sri Vrindavana Dhama.

In his Vraja-Riti-Cintamani, Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura informs us on the matter that:

"...some portion of transcendental Vrindavana becomes visible in this world at the time of Lord Krishna's manifest pastimes.
Conditioned souls think Vrindavana is material, although actually it is spiritual and beyond their ability to understand or describe it."

Here's the darsana of that Divine Land that we all aspire to attain.

Let us pray for the spiritual vision that will enable us to always reside in Vraja-bhumi.

H.H. Prahladananda Swami: Message from ISKCON Minister for Health and Welfare

By Prahladananda Swami

In 1967, Srila Prabhupada wrote to a disciple: “Be careful about your health first. This information is not only for you but all my noble sons. I am an old man. I may live or die it does not matter. But you must live for long time to push on this Krishna Consciousness movement.” In modern society, being healthy is uncommon, and the means of keeping or regaining health is often expensive and expressed in complicated ways. Srila Prabhupada, however, recommended cleanliness, regulation, and a pure consciousness. With its four regulative principles prohibiting flesh eating, intoxication, illicit sexual connections, and gambling, a Krishna consciousness lifestyle is quite conducive to staying fit. Additionally, eating food offered to Lord Krishna, or God, and chanting His holy names with love and attention will further prevent all kinds of unwanted deficiencies.

Kurma dasa, AU: Buckwheat Chapatis

roll em':

K from Australia writes:

Hi Kurma, Great site. Do you have recipe available for Buckwheat flatbreads? Chapattis? Rotis, please? I can't have gluten. I want to make some for my elderly parents, how long would they store? Can you freeze if necessary? Buckwheat, oil, salt and water? Would that turn out ok?

My reply:

Hello K, I do have a recipe for buckwheat chapatis. They are gluten-free. As far as freezing and storing: Well, fresh is best, but I guess they will last in the fridge if stored properly, and they may freeze.

Here's the recipe. By the way, they are very hard to roll out, having no gluten. Patience and a deft hand is required.

And no, oil is not required in the dough. The secret is mashed potato. Here we go:

Buckwheat Chapatis

Buckwheat is not technically a grain, but it lends itself to breads and pancakes as it behaves like a grain. In India and elsewhere, on the grain-free Vaisnava fasting day of Ekadasi, buckwheat, as well as other pseudo-grains, like chestnut flour and tapioca flour, are used in a variety of versatile ways. If you like the taste of buckwheat, you'll love these tender versions of India's most popular flatbread, the chapati.

Buckwheat contains no gluten, so those of you who can't eat wheat will find this recipe appealing. As far as equipment is concerned, you'll need at least one non-stick frypan, (two or three are better), a rolling pin, a smooth surface for rolling, and some kitchen tongs. Makes 10 large chapatis.

2 cups buckwheat flour, about 250g ½ teaspoon salt 300g peeled potatoes, about 3 medium-sized potatoes, cut into large pieces 3 tablespoons water a good quantity of extra buckwheat flour for dusting and rolling melted butter or ghee (optional, for spreading over the chapatis after they've been cooked)

roll em': Combine the buckwheat flour and salt in a large bowl.

roll em': Boil the potatoes in sufficient water until they are very soft. Remove, drain and mash them. Measure the quantity of mashed potatoes. You will need 1 cup. Place the measured quantity of mashed potatoes in a large metal sieve over a large kitchen bowl. Push and rub the potato through the sieve and collect it in the bowl.

roll em': Pre-heat the large non-stick frying pan, or pans over moderate heat. Combine the warm mashed potato with the buckwheat flour. Add the water a little at a time to form a soft, but not sticky dough. Turn the dough onto a clean, smooth working surface, sprinkled with buckwheat flour. Turn and knead the dough for one or two minutes.

roll em': Pinch off 10 even-sized lumps of dough and form them into smooth balls, pressing and kneading them gently into thick patties. Dredge a patty of dough in flour and place it on the flour-strewn surface. Carefully roll it with a dry, flour-sprinkled rolling pin to a fairly thin, even, smooth disc about 15 cm (6 inches) in diameter. If it sticks to the pin, re-roll it and apply more flour. A little care needs to be taken here since the dough contains no gluten and is very delicate.

roll em': Very carefully pick up the disc of dough and quickly transfer it to the frying pan. Slip it onto the hot pan, taking care to avoid wrinkling it. Cook it for about 1 minute on the first side. The top of the bread should start to show small bubbles, or it may even fully puff up in the pan - even better!

roll em': Turn it over, being careful not to tear it, and cook it on the reverse side. When a few dark spots appear on the underside, lift the chapati with kitchen tongs to about 5cm over a full flame, if you are using gas. If using an electric stove, you'll need to sit a cake cooling rack above, but not touching, the element. The chapati should swell into a puffy balloon.

roll em': Cook it until it shows a few more darker spots, then place it in a bowl or basket covered with a clean cloth, and continue cooking the rest of the chapatis. When they are cooked and stacked, you may like to butter them. Serve buckwheat chapatis hot, or keep them warm, well covered, in a pre-heated warm oven for up to half an hour.

Akrura das, Gita Coaching: PREACHING HAPPINESS

I recommend to most devotees that come to me for Gita Coaching to engage in some kind of preaching.

Preaching itself or connection to preaching ensure happiness because Krsna is very much pleased if we preach.

Without this, life is not as good as it can be.

And it is not hard and complicated.

It may be as simple as giving someone an invitation card or making friends with them.

Those who are convinced of or experience the great benefit of preaching, once started, never stop engaging in it.

Preaching is the highest happiness. Therefore, Krsna's best devotees do it.

Preaching transforms our lives and lives of others.

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: The Terrible Turban

From the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.

The Terrible Turban, or ‘Here we go, thin-jabis, here we go!’ or Slumdog Steel-ionaire

Terrible_Turban
Lal Bhatti rockin’ the Terrible Turban

Polka, rap, classic rock, country, folk, blues — name a musical genre, and there is a Steelers song to go with it. So why not some good old-fashioned Punjabi-influenced Bhangra-infused hip-hop?

Uh … come again?

BlackMahal, a San Francisco band, has created possibly the most unique Steelers song to come down the pike, ever, called Black, Gold and Silver — the ‘silver’ is a reference to the Lombardi Trophy (which must come as relief to the small percentage of you worked up about Wiz Khalifa’s use of “Yellow” rather than “Gold”) — and comes up with a interesting new moniker for the team — the thin-jabis.

According to a release from the band:

“”Steelers Nation is a worldwide community so it’s time for the rest of the world, like us, to express our love for the Steelers in local flavors,” says BlackMahal rapper and executive producer Vijay Chattha, a native of Weirton, WV, just 45 minutes from Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field stadium.

“”The new colors of the Pittsburgh Steelers are black, gold and silver,” continues Chattha. “The Lombardi trophy and its silver sheen has become a standard of success in the team’s historic franchise, so we wanted to celebrate our colors on the song.”

“”The song takes the classic black and gold colors of the Pittsburgh Steelers and adds the silver of the storied Lombardi Trophy, given to the winner of NFL Super Bowl. First there was ‘Here We Go” by Roger Wood then “Black and Yellow” from Wiz Khalifa. Now BlackMahal unveils the first bhangra-infused anthem for football fans, “Black, Gold and Silver.”

“”The song features some dedications and samples of the late Steelers broadcaster and icon, Myron Cope as the band re-invents the, “Yoi, Yoi, and Double Yoi” catchphrase.

[The song] also introduces a new name for the team that sits at the confluence of the Monongahela, Alleghany and Ohio Rivers, translating them into ‘thin-jabis’ or “those from the three rivers.”

Part P-Funk, part Punjabi-Funk, BlackMahal is a 10-piece live music experience complete with drums, DJs, horns, hip-hop MCs, and the godfather of Punjabi-American music – Ustad Lal Singh Bhatti.

BlackMahal’s lead vocalist, Lal ‘Blitz-Singh’ Bhatti, is regarded as the godfather of Punjabi-American music. Bhatti has collaborated with the Black Eyed Peas, The Doors and has performed for nearly every U.S. President since Gerald Ford as well has being honored at the opening of the Smithsonian Sikh Gallery in 2005.

You can download the song here.

H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Wednesday 2 February 2011--Don't Fall Into the Trap of Sanctimoniousness--and--Does Krishna Get Angry?

A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course(TM) Wednesday 2 February 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Today's Thought: Don't Fall Into the Trap of Sanctimoniousness Uploaded from Bhaktivedanta Ashram--Austin, Texas USA To be sanctimonious is to make a false show of being very spiritually advanced. And sanctimoniousness is the foolish attitude of the sanctimonious person. In the material world where even the pauper is proud of his penny, everyone has the tendency to be proud of whatever he or she possesses. Therefore an aspiring transcendentalist has to be very careful not to fall into the trap of sanctimoniousness. He has to be very careful not to become proud of whatever spiritual progress he has made or whatever talents or opulences he possesses. If he does not check his pride, his pride will check him. To conquer over pride he should always feel himself to be lower than the straw in the street and offer all respect to others without demanding any respect for himself. This is one of the most sublime teachings of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead who appeared in the form of His most merciful devotee 500 years ago in India. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the Supreme Teacher http://www.backtohome.com/images/Gauranga.jpg Answers According to the Vedic Version: Question: Does Krishna Get Angry? Does Krishna get angry anytime? If He does get angry, how does He react? Should a devotee get angry or not? Thanks in advance, Vinay Answer: Krishna Becomes the Most Angry Krishna becomes very, very angry when His devotees are tortured. He became so angry when Hiranyakasipu was trying to kill Prahlada Maharaja that He appeared in the form of Lord Nrsimhadeva and ripped that rascal apart with His own finger nails. If a devotee is personally insulted he remains meek and humble. But if the Lord or another devotee is insulted, he becomes angry like fire to chastise the blasphemer. Such anger is divine. Rupa Madhurya das, TX, USA: Lecture - Prahladananda Swami - BG 14.4 - Everything Perfectly Made by Nothing

Lecture on Bhagavad-gita Chapter 14, Text 4 by Prahladananda Swami titled "Everything Perfectly Made by Nothing."

Dallas, TX
2010-12-11

Bhagavad-gita As It Is 14.4

sarva-yonishu kaunteya
murtayah sambhavanti yah
tasam brahma mahad yonir
aham bija-pradah pita

TRANSLATION

It should be understood that all species of life, O son of Kunti, are made possible by birth in this material nature, and that I am the seed-giving father.

PURPORT

In this verse it is clearly explained that the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna, is the original father of all living entities. The living entities are combinations of the material nature and the spiritual nature. Such living entities are seen not only on this planet but on every planet, even on the highest, where Brahma is situated. Everywhere there are living entities; within the earth there are living entities, even within water and within fire. All these appearances are due to the mother, material nature, and Krishna's seed-giving process. The purport is that the material world is impregnated with living entities, who come out in various forms at the time of creation according to their past deeds.

Mukunda Charan das, SA: Amazing Creamy Halava

Serves 20

Method

1. 1 3/4 500g blocks of butter and 2 500g packets of semolina

2. Melt 1 3/4 blocks of butter (500g) over fairly low heat.  Add fennel seeds and bay leaves to butter.  Add semolina.  Cook until semolina goes the colour of beach sand (about 20 mins).

3.  Syrup. Add 1 3/4 litres full cream milk to 2 litres of water.  Add the equivalent amount of sugar as semolina and butter (1.875 kg) to the water.  Bring to boil, then simmer until it is fairly condensed.  Takes about 25 mins.

4. Slowly pour the syrup into the roasted semolina mix and cook on medium heat for five to ten minutes.  One of the ways you can usually tell that the halava is finished is if it peels from the side of the pot or gets a pasty texture.

5.  Other ways to enhance this preparation is to add currants, saffron, glazed pineapples or cashew nuts.

6.  Always offer your food to Krishna to make your cooking complete.

A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course(TM) Tuesday 1 February 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. Today's Thought: Be True to Your Guru. He's Saving You. Uploaded from Bhaktivedanta Ashram--Austin, Texas USA When after careful study of the revealed scriptures and due deliberation we accept someone as our spiritual master, we must be very careful to always faithfully follow his instructions because Krishna measures our devotion to Him by how much we are dedicated to our spiritual master. It is not that we simply use our spiritual master as a ladder to attain the transcendental platform and then after attaining it kick him away. No. We must always remain fully dedicated and surrendered to our spiritual master because it is by his mercy that we are being delivered from the vicious cycle of birth, death, old age, and disease. Even after going back to home, back to Godhead one still remains the eternal servant of his spiritual master. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Answers According to the Vedic Version: Question: Stop My Personal Projects? Is it necessary to leave one's studies or personal projects to be able to practice Krishna consciousness? What influence does it have if I have thoughts and desires for improvement in all areas and I offer them to Krishna--for example, to be well situated economically to provide well for a family and not live in misery? The other matter concerns the principles. If one is having difficulty fulfilling some principle, is this a fault that impedes chanting the Maha Mantra? It is supposed that the Maha Mantra is tremendous, so if we chant it we enter in contact with God and therefore we will have the best experiences of our life. L.W. Answer: Offer Them to Krishna One does not have to change one's position in society to become Krishna conscious. Whatever you are doing now, you simply do that for Krishna. That is Krishna consciousness. It is your duty to see that your family is comfortably taken care of. So you should be very responsible in this regard. The key is to remember that it is not your household. It is the property of Krishna. So now you should have a nice spiritual program with your family members in the morning and evening and work to maintain Krishna's household so that all the family members can peacefully practice Krishna consciousness and go back to home, back to Godhead. In Krishna consciousness we have four regulative principles: no illicit sex, no meat eating, no intoxication, and no gambling. If you are not able to follow these principles strictly, it will be more difficult for you to absorb yourself in Krishna consciousness. Therefore we advise you to strictly follow these principles so that you can progress along the path of bhakti without any impediment. It is a fact that by chanting sincerely we will the experience the best of all possible lives. Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (Who is non-different from Krishna Himself). Part 2

“Mahaprabhu [the great master], the Supreme Being, is brilliantly effulgent and imperishable like molten gold, and [through sankirtana] bestows spiritual intelligence on the living beings. In the guise of a sannyasi, He is the source of spiritual purity and liberation.”
~ Svetasvatara Upanishad (3.12)

“In the age of Kali I shall descend as the son of Sachidevi to inaugurate the sankirtana movement.”
~ Vayu Purana

“In the age of Kali, intelligent persons perform congregational chanting to worship the incarnation of Godhead who constantly sings the names of Krishna. Although His complexion is not blackish [like that of Lord Krishna], He is Krishna Himself. He is accompanied by His associates, servants, weapons and confidential companions.”
~ Srimad-Bhagavatam (11.5.32)

H.H. Jayadvaita Swami: Time to retire?

For those who might find it of interest, I pass along, without comment, the following:

In the Mahabharata, Santi Parva, Srila Vyasadeva says, “When the householder beholds wrinkles on his body and grey hair on his head, and children of his children, he should then retire into the forest. The third part of his life [from 50 to 75 years] he should pass in the observance of the vanaprastha mode.”

Bharatavarsa.net: Book distribution seminar: Friendship beyond this world

I was walking up Bloor Street when I met two guys. I thought they would never stop, but interestingly they did, and I started to talk to them about The Perfection of Yoga. Even then I didn't realize how sincere these two were. One of them wanted to know more about mantras.

I asked him how he knew about this, and he said that he was in jail and started to 'like his mind' and other inmates told him about mantras.

I'd never met anyone from jail, so I didn't know what to say.

I said "At least you were in a prison where you can see the bars. In the world everyone is in a prison with invisible bars called sex desire."

That resonated with them, and they started to talk. I remembered Candramauli Maharaja's book about preaching in prison. So I started to tell them about that.

His friend was also interested. He said that his ex-girlfriend taught him about yoga and meditation and that she used to chant.

I told him that he shouldn't have left her, and he said that he didn't, she did.

I taught them to say "Gauranga". They chanted it, but then asked me how to practice what should they do. I told them the Hare Krishna mantra and explained the whole meaning. Right there on the street they repeated the maha-mantra word by word. They wanted to know more, but I was out of Bhagavad-gitas, so I asked them to come to Bloor and Spadina in an hour.

I had little hope they would, but to my great surprise I saw them there.

I showed them the Bhagavad-gita, and they were both mesmerized. They wanted to get it, but had no money. Somehow magically one found ten dollars in his pocket and got a Bhagavad-gita and straight away gave it to his friend, even though it was clear that he wanted it too. He told his friend to let him read it next. My heart melted at the simplicity of their friendship, so I took a paperback version and gave it to him. He was so happy and said he would come tomorrow.

One came to the class on Friday and even got a Krishna book. He chanted japa and took beads with him. Now he told me his side of the story: how he and his friend was surprised when stopped, because according to them people generally give way to them, considering them thugs. He explained how his friend had had a fight with his wife and just wanted to get out of the house, and they both met up. Generally he walks on another street, but for some reason his friend said, "I want to walk on Bloor," and then we met.

He also told me when he heard the maha-mantra he remembered it right away. Later, while I was washing dishes, he explained to me how his friend spent two years in Jail, and that they both were only 23 years old. The e-mail he wrote me before coming:

*Hey Mangal Arti, thank you for speaking to us. My friend put his nose right in the book as soon as we got home. He really likes it, and I'm going to read it as soon as he's done. What time is the thing tomorrow? I think you said 6:30, but I'm not sure. Let me know.*

Japa Group: I Put My Heart Into The Syllables

The quality of my japa is questionable. It is not suddha-nama, or chanting without offenses. But I sincerely complete my quota. I put my heart into the syllables and the getting-done of the quota.
